Does it work for someone who has never installed my app?

Yes. The link goes to the store first, and the first time the app opens it lands on the screen the link was meant for.

Why did a link open the store when the app is installed?

Usually the Apple or Google files are not trusted yet. Press Check your setup and fix what it reports, then wait a few minutes.

Can I change where a link goes later?

Yes. Open the link in the Links tab and edit it. The address stays the same.
